Fundraising

Fundraising ThermometerVolunteering with Volunteer Abroad is an incredible opportunity to learn and to help - but because it is a volunteer experience, there are a lot of costs involved. Participants in Volunteer Abroad programs are expected to raise the funds necessary to cover their travel, insurance, vaccinations, and program fee - which includes accommodations and, for the most part, food. I am therefore hoping to raise $6000 over the next few months.

What I Will Do
Between now and May 1st - when the final payment is due - I plan to apply for grants designed to help students volunteering abroad, hold fundraising events in the Edmonton area and write letters to potential sponsors. I also intend to document my experience on this blog while in Nicaragua, and would love to give presentations upon my return to groups who offer their support for the project. After all, I like learning new things but I also love sharing them!

What Volunteer Abroad Will Do
Because most of the organizations volunteers work with are small and only registered in the host country, Volunteer Abroad isn't able to offer charitable tax receipts to sponsors. They do, however, offer recognition to those who sponsor their volunteers on their website and in their online newsletter.

What You Can Do
My fundraising efforts need your help to be successful - but there many ways to contribute, such as:
- suggesting grants or potential sponsors
- participating in fundraising events
- volunteering for fundraising events
- donating raffle items
- making monetary donations
- sharing fundraising ideas

If you have any questions, or if you would like to lend a hand or make a donation, please feel free to email me!
